Earwigs have an unfair legend about them, as some say earwigs crawl into people's ears and tunnel through their brains with their sharp pincers. The reality isn't quite so grim. There are more than 20 species of earwigs in the United States. The European earwig is common to Arizona. They do prey on aphids, which can be helpful, but they can destroy plants extremely quickly, one of their main food staples. Keep in mind, earwigs are nocturnal and like to hide in small, moist areas during the day, feeding on insects and plants at night.
